Mystery as Blue Dogs Are Spotted in Chernobyl’s Exclusion Zone

Wild dogs living near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant have baffled scientists after several were seen turning a vivid shade of blue.

The animal welfare group Dogs of Chernobyl, which monitors the packs that roam the Exclusion Zone, reported the strange colour change last week, noting:

“They were not blue last week. We do not know the reason and are attempting to catch them to find out what is happening.”

There are around 700 dogs still living in the irradiated zone — descendants of pets abandoned after the 1986 nuclear disaster.

Experts suspect the blue colouration could be caused by chemical exposure or mineral contamination, but radiation-linked mutations haven’t been ruled out.

Efforts are underway to capture and test the affected animals.
